The Mt. Carmel tennis Aces, who took a large group to the state tournament, have landed a large group on the Southern Illinois Coaches Association all-south team.

Leading the team is senior Tyra Buss, who won the MVP award for the fourth straight year. Also landing spots were senior Malarie Hargrave, junior Hannah Seaton and junior Elise Thomason. All four played at the state tournament in Chicago.

Buss, who was also named third-team all-state, won the sectional championship four years in a row. She advanced farther at state than any other player from southern Illinois, not eliminated until the fifth round.

Her match record for four years is a combined 102-7, though her regular-season and sectional level record was perfect.

Hargrave teamed with Thomason in doubles play for a fourth-place finish at the Carbondale sectional, which qualified them for state.

As a duo, they finished with an 17-11 record.

Seaton advanced to state for the first time by finishing fourth at the sectional tournament. Her overall match record was 19-10.

Centralia and Olney matched Mt. Carmel’s selection total of four.

Olney landed the doubles combo of Kelsey Shipman and Alex Kauble, who were 26-3 after a 25th-place finish at state. A pair of freshmen, Nicole Shan and Audrey Jensen, also were named to the all-south squad.

Coaches named two Centralia doubles teams to the team. Katie Hartmann and Elle Wells were only 8-3 during the season but qualified for state by placing third at the sectional. Senior Abbey Holtkamp and junior partner Sanny Ingersoll, 20-3, won the doubles championship at the sectional.

Carbondale landed two singles players, Lauren Butler (23-4 overall) and freshman Niusha Daneshdoost (21-6).

ALSO: Malarie Hargrave was the top award winner at the recent Lady Aces tennis banquet.

Hargrave, a senior, won the Golden Racquet Award, named for the MVP of the team. She was one of four Lady Aces players to advance to the IHSA state tournament in Chicago.

State qualifiers Tyra Buss, Elise Thomason and Hannah Seaton were honored in addition to Hargrave.

Cassie Conn and Carly Reeves were also members of the sectional championship team, which was also honored by Bramlet at the banquet. All seven varsity team members received varsity letters or pins.

Junior varsity letters were presented to Kelly Nohl, Raven Lockard, Lacey Risley, Natalie Laws, Isabella Noll and Ivy Kolb.

Laws was named the most improved among the JV players.
