CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Mount Carmel boys swimming team finished the season on Saturday at the IHSA Sectional meet held at Champaign Centennial High School.
The first to hit the pool was freshman Boyd Holt in the 200 yard Individual Medley. He finished 12th, earning one team point, with a time of 2:30.85, besting his seed time by almost two seconds.
In the 100 yard freestyle, senior Cameron Whaley beat his seed time by almost four seconds, finishing in a 17th place tie in a time of 1:04.02.
Holt returned in the 100 yard backstroke to record the other five points the Aces scored. His time of 1:05.52 was good for an eighth-place finish.
Both Whaley and senior Grady Wilkinson swam in the 100 yard breaststroke. Wilkinson took 14th with a time of 1:18.49, with Whaley next in 15th in a time of 1:24.03. Wilkinson was disqualified in his other individual events, the 100 yard butterfly.
Champaign Central won the meet with 289 points, with the host Chargers second at 224. Mahomet-Seymour edged out Urbana by two points, 135-133, to claim third in the final standings. The Aces total of six points was good for an 18th-place tie with Salt Fork and Urbana U. High. A total of 23 teams scored points.
Swimmers who either won events or hit the state qualifying standards advance on to the IHSA state finals, set for this weekend at New Trier High School in suburban Winetka. LaGrange Lyons won last year’s meet held at Evanston.
