Effingham, Ill. – The Mt. Carmel girl’s golf team did more than win their second straight IHSA Class A regional championship on Wednesday. In routing the field here, they sent a message to the rest of the state that they are ready to compete for a state tournament bid.

The Lady Aces blitzed the field at the Effingham Country Club Course, winning the title by 24 strokes. Mt. Carmel’s team score of 361 bettered two teams who use this as their home course: second-place Effingham (385) and third-place Effingham St. Anthony (390). Those three teams will advance to the Class A Sectional tournament Monday at West Frankfort.

CENTRALIA, Ill. – If Tuesday’s IHSA Class 2A boy’s regional golf tournament had been a nine-hole affair, the Golden Aces would be moving on to the sectional as a team.

But, unfortunately, it wasn’t and the Aces aren’t.

“We were in the hunt for the first nine holes, but just fell apart on the back nine,” said Mt. Carmel coach John White after his team had finished seventh in the 18-hole, 10-team tournament, missing the sectional cut by four places and 17 shots.

MT. CARMEL - Allen Byrns hit a hole in one Thursday at the Mt. Carmel Golf Course.
Byrns aced No. 2, a 153-yard hole, using a 7-iron.
The feat was witnessed by Marvin Monk.
It is the seventh hole in one this year on the Mt. Carmel, but the first since June 26, when Stan Williams turned the trick, also on No. 2. It’s the third time that hole has been aced this year, Ryan Bobbitt having done it as well on April 12.
Others to hit a hole in one this summer include Nick Deisher, Allen York, Ryan Jenner and Tim Bell.
John Rhine of Mt. Carmel also recorded an ace, at Victoria National Golf Club, on June 12.

MT. VERNON, Ill. - There was still plenty of good to come out of Thursday’s five-team golf tournament on the Green Hills Golf Club course here for Mt. Carmel, despite a second-place finish.
Though the Aces lost to Nashville for the top spot by 14 strokes, they won’t have to deal with the Hornets again this year, because the winners will play in the Class 1A ranks next month when post-season play begins.
The Aces did, however, defeat two teams they will see Oct. 7 in the IHSA Class 2A regional, besting Mt. Vernon by six shots and Marion by nine.
Woodlawn finished last in the field with a 183, 35 shots behind Nashville’s winning score of 148.

OLNEY, Ill. - With his Mt. Carmel boys golf team apparently in a late-season slump, veteran John White said there is still time to get things turned around before the IHSA Class 2A Regional tournament on Oct. 7.
It was “another disappointing round by us” here on Wednesday, White said. “We have a week and a half to get things straightened out.”
The Golden Aces finished in the middle of a triangular, their team score of 167 one stroke short of winner Effingham St. Anthony. Host Olney finished well off the pace at 186.
