EFFINGHAM - MCHS Soccer Aces continue streak with third win in last three matches with 3-1 victory over Effingham. We played Effingham for the first time that I can remember and it makes for a long trip especially for a week day match. But, getting a win helps make the bus ride home almost bearable.
We scored in the third minute when Senior Davis Vargo served a ball over the top to Junior Fabian Nordell. This held until the 25th minute when Effingham tied the match 1-1. Vargo served up another nice ball in the 43rd minute to sophomore Quaid Rodgers for the game winning goal. Senior Nate Jackson added an insurance and the final goal in the 63rd minute giving us the 3-1 victory. Wind was a factor for the second night in a row but the players dealt with it and came out on top. Our first half play was a little hectic. We found ourselves playing the long ball to often and leaving the central midfield open and vulnerable for counter attacks. Stopper Parker Wilkinson pushed a little higher in the second half and won balls so we could get Vargo the ball more often and allow him to create scoring opportunities. Senior keeper Cameron Kieffer did an excellent job controlling the 18 yard box saving seven shots on goal. Something we need to improve on is our understanding about managing the clock when we have a lead. We played every ball to quickly when we should have tried possessing the ball and this allowed Effingham to have the ball and create dangerous situations. We can easily correct this and will do so in our next training session. This puts us at 5-7-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the Big 8.
