MT. VERNON, Ind. - The scoreboard did not tell the whole story on Tuesday night in Mt. Vernon. Because there was more to the host Wildcats’ 7-2 Big 8 Conference soccer win over Mt. Carmel than indicated.
“This was one of those games that, in some ways, looked better than the scoreboard did,” said Golden Aces’ coach Ed Berberich. “We played well in spurts but didn’t sustain that play consistently enough to change the outcome. We’re seeing good effort in each game and we’re seeing some hints of things we can build on.”
Mt. Vernon scored goals in the third, ninth, 19th and 23rd minutes to take a 4-0 lead.
Mt. Carmel (0-4, 0-1 in Big 8 Conference) hit the board in the 25th minute when Cole Linson scored on an assist from Ryan Webb. The Aces scored again in the 35th minute on a shot from Doug Sievers, to pull to within 4-2.
The Wildcats put up three unanswered goals in the second half to pull away to the win.
Berberich said the Aces still need work on becoming more patient on the attack, because they often get good starts on possessions. “We’re doing a good job of passing to our goalie to start our attacks when the ball is in the back,” he said. “We just need to improve on building play up from there.”
