MOUNT CARMEL, ILL. – Mount Carmel had control of the ball with 44 seconds left in a 39-39 game against Carmi on Monday night at the Hilltop. Would the Lady Aces whittle the clock, call a time out, then run a play? Or would they play through to the horn?

They didn’t need to do the former, because they were ready for the latter.

PRINCETON, IND. – Mt. Carmel never trailed in Tuesday night’s Big 8 Conference game at Princeton. But, they never led by much either.

The Golden Aces were in a dogfight most of the night against their closest rivals from Indiana, finally grabbing their largest lead of eight points seconds before the finish in a 55-50 win. The win improved Mount Carmel to 10-0 for what is believed to be only the second time in school history.

VINCENNES, IND. – You could tell something was up the first-time Vincennes Lincoln had the ball Friday night.

“It had a weird feeling to it the way we opened the game,” said Mount Carmel basketball coach Tyler Buss of the Alices slowdown tactic employed throughout their Big 8 Conference game, eventually won by Mount Carmel, 35-24.

“I feel like we need to go home and practice. We didn’t really do much tonight,” Buss chuckled after his club’s third wire-to-wire win in the last four games. “There was a lot of standing around so it messed our subbing up.”

By halftime the Golden Aces led, but only 15-7. There was a total of four fouls on the board, and neither team shot a free throw in the first half.

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. – Mount Carmel girl’s basketball coach Tim Willis should probably pitch a program idea to cable TV network DIY. No, Willis isn’t doing a home makeover. Instead, he’s into team makeovers. As in his Lady Aces, forced to completely switch gears on the fly in the wake of the loss of inside stalwart Kylie Applebey to a season-ending knee injury.

Willis must now flip his team into a smaller, quicker unit which manufactures points through pressure defense and outright hustle. The Lady Aces lost their first game without Appelebey (and Mollie Dardeen, too, though she is expected back soon) at Princeton on Monday, but bounced back Thursday night for a 53-43 non-conference win over Edwards County at the Hilltop.

ROBINSON, ILL. – Coming off their first-ever win over Jasper in an uber-hyped Big 8 Conference game three days prior, the undefeated Mount Carmel boys basketball team had itself set up for a classic “trap” game on Tuesday at Robinson.

The game turned out to be anything but that for the Golden Aces.

Mount Carmel (7-0) showed no signs of overconfidence. Instead, the Aces looked smooth as silk in building a 25-point lead by halftime, then costing in from there for a 56-42 non-conference win.
