ALLENDALE— Despite 36 points from Jackson Marcotte, West Salem was able to overcome host Allendale, 49-44, and win the championship of the Yellow Jackets’ invitational on Monday.
Allendale (3-2) opened the three-game round-robin with a 43-13 victory over New Hebron. Marcotte led the way with 39 points, followed by Brooklyn Sikes and Madison Smith with two points each.
West Salem then followed with a 45-23 win over New Hebron to create a true championship game.
In the finals, Colton Etzkorn added eight points for the Jackets.
Allendale plays at county rival St. Mary’s Monday.
• The St. Mary’s girls teams both lost close games at home to Olney St. Joseph Monday.
Down by nine points at the end of the third period, St. Mary’s began to chip away but ran out of time in a 34-28 eighth-grade loss.
Morgan York led the Lady Rockets with 14 points. Paige Hocking added six points.
In the seventh-grade game, St. Joe won, 21-18. St. Mary’s was led by Amelia Tennes with 10 points. Meredith Jones chipped in six points.
The Lady Rockets next play at the Diocesan Tournament on Dec. 13.
