Mt. Carmel’s most famous female athlete is about to realize her dream to play professional basketball. Indiana Women's Basketball alum Tyra Buss has signed a contract to play for Sporting Athens in Athens, Greece for the upcoming season.
In a press release issued by IU, Buss said "I am beyond excited to announce that I will be continuing my basketball career in Athens Greece. It has always been a dream of mine to play professionally and I am so grateful for this opportunity I have been given. First and foremost, I want to thank my parents and family for always supporting me. I also want to thank the coaches and staff at IU for preparing me for this next chapter in my basketball career. I am excited for this new journey and look forward to all the opportunities I'll have to work on my game and to experience new adventures in another country."
Buss finished her career as the IU program's record holder in seven categories including points scored (2,364), steals (293), assists (574), free throws made (633) and points per game (17.5). She helped lead Indiana to the 2018 WNIT Championship, where she named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. The Mt. Carmel, Ill. native was a three-time All-Big Ten first team selection and two-time WBCA All-American honorable mention. Buss is part of the all-time winningest senior class in program history, completing her career with 82 wins.
At Mt. Carmel High School, Buss was named Illinois Ms. Basketball in 2011 and 2012, setting every scoring record at the Hilltop. She played on the only team in school history to finish the regular-season with an undefeated record (29-0 in 2010-11, en route to a finish of 32-1)
Sporting Athens plays in the Greek Women's First Division and is one of the most successful organizations, having won 21 Greek Women's League championships.
