Tyra Buss received an extra special surprise on her 18th birthday Friday. The City of Mt. Carmel presented her with one of the giant city entrance signs proclaiming her as Ms. Basketball.

Buss has since won the award for a second straight year (which she will accept Saturday night in Bloomington-Normal), and the new signs have already popped up at major entrances to the city.

The gift was wrapped as Mayor Bill Hudson serenaded her with “Happy Birthday” on the trumpet.

“You’ve brought honor to yourself, your family, all your fans, the county, city and the state of Illinois,” Hudson said. “I know you have something scheduled for tomorrow that will be bigger than this. This (gift) is the past and tomorrow you will have the future.”

Buss set countless state and school records at the Hilltop during her four-year career. The Indiana-signee scored 4,987 points, the second-highest point total in U.S. girls high school history. She set a school single-game mark with 66 points against Princeton on Dec. 28, 2013.
