As she awaits word on whether she will repeat as Illinois Ms. Basketball, two more awards have been bestowed upon Mt. Carmel’s Tyra Buss.

Last week, she was named the Gatorade Illinois girls player of the year and was also one of 20 players selected to the Parade Magazine All-America team.

By midway into her senior season, Buss had already smashed the state career scoring record which formerly belonged to Olney’s Brittany Johnson, and finished with 4,897 points, the second highest total in U.S. prep history.

Buss, an Indiana signee, averaged 45.8 points per game for Mt. Carmel (27-5), which advanced to the IHSA Class 2A sectional championship game.

The Gatorade award also rewards academic excellence, of which Buss is perfectly suited as well. She carries a perfect GPA of 5.0 on a 5-point scale, and is currently No. 1 in her class.

Voting is underway for Ms. Basketball, an award Buss is favored to repeat. Statewide media and school officials have until March 26 to cast a ballot. The winner will be announced on March 28 by the Chicago Tribune, the sponsor of the award, and on social media.
