It may not have been an upset according to state rankings. But to most in southern Illinois, Teutopolis’ victory over previously-undefeated Breese Central was unexpected.

Monday’s 49-44 win at the IHSA super-sectional game in Salem advanced the Lady Wooden Shoes to the Class 2A state tournament this weekend in Bloomington.

Madeline Hartke led T-town with 20 points and five rebounds. Sharpshooter Cierra Thompson added 12 for the Shoes (28-5), which won the sectional title last week with a win over Mt. Carmel.

Breese Central (32-1) was led by Torre Kohrmann with 14 points.

Teutopolis, ranked No. 2 in the final wire service poll of the year, will meet top-ranked Champaign St. Thomas More in the state semifinal Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Redbird Arena in Bloomington.
