The Mt. Carmel eighth grade Junior Aces opened up a close game in the fourth quarter to post a 47-40 victory over Carmi in junior high basketball at MCMS Thursday. The win earned a sweep of the night for the hosts, after a 7th-grade victory opened the night.

The Junior Aces led only 33-32 at the end of the third quarter, but opened some breathing room in the final frame by outscoring the Bullpups 14-8.

Matt Lies’ ballclub featured a very balanced scoring attack, led by Blake Golden with 10 points. Austin Rager and Zach Whittler added eight points apiece, followed by Brayden Stipp with seven points. Bret Doan and Dawson Brown both tacked on five points, while Evan Kieffer and Brayden Peterson each wound up with two points.

Carmi was led by Easton Stewart with 15 points.

In the seventh-grade game, Mt. Carmel prevailed, 42-10. The Aces bolted to a 16-0 lead at the end of the first period and never looked back.

Doan led Mt. Carmel with 11 points. Logan Durham added eight points, Noah Singer six. Ashton Walker had five, followed by Brock Plassman with four. Jaden Merritt ended up with three points, while Cole Rich and Zack Sutton finished with two each. Luke Gould rounded out the scoring with one.
Mt. Carmel led 31-4 at halftime.

• The WEAA Conference tournament, delayed repeatedly by the weather, looks like it will finally get underway on Monday at Geff School.

St. Mary’s and West Salem will open tournament play Monday at 6 p.m. followed by Jasper and Grayville at 7:15 p.m.

Allendale opens play on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. against the hosts.

New Hope is the top-seed in the tournament, which wraps up on Friday.
