Three Mt. Carmel seniors will be part of the field when Illinois and Indiana all-star basketball teams of boys and girls meet in “Clash on the Wabash” Friday night at Spencer Sports Center.
The girls game begins at 5:30 p.m. with the boys game to follow.
Joey Molstad, the Aces 5-foot-7 guard, will play for the 15-player Illinois boys team to be coached by Randy Bishop of Lawrenceville. Meanwhile, the Illinois girls team, coached by Fairfield’s Tonya Conrad, includes her former star player, Alyssa Lang, who transferred to Mt. Carmel for her senior season, along with 5-foot-8 forward Jessica Gill, who is headed for St. Mary’s of the Woods this fall.
Wabash Valley College fans will get a preview of one of southern Illinois’ best players who will return in the fall to play for the Warriors. Devantae Price, a 6-foot-1 forward from Egyptian, was named second team all-state in Class 1A. He averaged 27.6 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Pharaohs, topping out at 50 points in one game.
Other area players on the Illinois roster include Johnna Laws of Edwards County, Logan Bell of Grayville, Matt Young of Red Hill along with Jacob Potts and Braxton Blagrave of Lawrenceville.
Also playing for Illinois are 6-foot-9 Lamar Humphrey of Chicago suburban Homewood-Flossmoor, 6-foot-5 Xavier Martin of Champaign Central and 6-foot-4 Dalton Crunk of Freeburg.
The formidable Indiana boys team will be coached by Brent Chitty of Columbus East. Five of the 15 all-stars come from the Big 8 Conference, including three from two-time league champion Vincennes, Cole Claycomb, Kentucky Wesleyan-bound Devin Lett and Patrick Toole. Mt. Vernon center Brian Koch and Princeton guard Will Niederhaus will also play again in Mt. Carmel.
From the area will come Gibson Southern center Spencer Schmitt, Travis Fleisher of Wood Memorial and Wes Harness of North Posey.
Other Hoosiers expected to play include 6-foot-7 Chandler Rowe of Indianapolis North Central, who played summer ball in the Indiana Elite program where Mt. Carmel sophomore Levi Laws starred last year, 6-foot-4 Jordan King of Indianapolis Ben Davis and 6-foot-8 Larry Johnson, who averaged 15.2 points for Hamilton Southeastern.
On the Illinois girls roster, three Fairfield seniors will join their coach on the court: McKenna Williams, Driahna Hopper and Emily McKibben. From the area comes Southeastern-bound Sydney Clark of Carmi and McKenzi Kelly of Lawrenceville.
The Indiana girls will be coached by veteran Charlie Mair of Princeton, who will bring along Kennedy Christy and Jessica Gonzalez from the 19-6 Lady Tigers.
Four-time All-Big 8 Conference selection Jacey Ritzert of Mt. Vernon will be there, as will Amy Brandenstein of North Posey and Audra Cox of Wood Memorial.
Concessions will be available. The dance team “The Next Step” will perform at half time, according to organizers.
