Olney wasn’t about to let Mt. Carmel run it out of the gym again.

After losing by 31 points in the championship of the Capital Classic last month, the Tigers took a different approach towards the second matchup Saturday at the Hilltop.

They slowed the game down in the half-court, put up a box-and-one defense to keep Reece Metcalf under wraps and kept the game in the 30s, more to their liking.

It almost worked.

C.J. Diel went inside for the final three Mt. Carmel baskets for a 40-39 non-conference win, which was not finalized until the Tigers turned the ball over with nine seconds to play.

The first Diel basket put the Aces up, 36-34. After Olney’s Evan Eagleson countered with two free throws, Diel scored twice more to make it 40-36.

Alec St. Pierre then hit a basket and a free throw on a foul to close the gap to 40-39. Then, Olney suddenly was given a chance to win it when the Aces turned the ball over at the :17 mark. But, the Tigers couldn’t hang on either, resulting in an Aces sweep of the season series.

Diel and Austin Thompson both led Mt. Carmel (6-3) with 10 points. Levi Laws netted nine points to close to within 14 points of the 1,000-point mark.

Mt. Carmel won the junior varsity contest, 52-33, with Deric Wright leading the way with 12 points.
