It had already happened earlier in his senior season. Reece Metcalf said his Golden Aces basketball teammates weren’t about to let it happen again.

“We ended our football careers with one of the craziest games you could ever watch. We weren’t going to end our basketball season like that. Thank goodness we pulled out a win,” said senior Metcalf after the Aces outlasted Flora in a hair-raiser of a regional championship at the Hilltop Friday.

Because of the 92-87 double-overtime win, Mt. Carmel plays tonight in the Class 2A sectional against another opponent from the cardiac past.

Carterville (24-6), the opponent in tonight’s first semifinal basketball game at Du Quoin, fell to the Aces, 50-49 in overtime, in the second-round of the Class 3A playoffs last fall.

The basketball Lions can also put up points, but in a balanced fashion.

The brother combination of Will and Matt Galik (both 6-foot-4) lead the Lions inside, both averaging over  14 points per game.

On the outside, it is 6-foot-1 guard Micheal Aschemann, a 1,000-point career scorer, and 5-foot-10 Blake Watson, who recently returned after a three-week illness, who control the offense.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Tickets at the door cost $5.
