BELLEVILLE, Ill. — If Wabash Valley goes on to win the Great Rivers Athletic Conference baseball championship, the Warriors will have John A. Logan to thank.
While WVC was edging past Southwestern, 3-2, in the first game of the final league series of the year on Thursday, John Logan was busy playing the role of spoiler. The Vols knocked off former co-leader Rend Lake, 3-1, breaking the tie at the top and giving the Warriors sole possession of first place with two games remaining in the regular season.
Rob Fournier’s club, in addition to reaching the 40-win plateau, improved to 17-5 in the GRAC. Rend Lake is now one game back at 16-6. WVC hosts Southwestern (21-22, 7-15) on Saturday in a noon doubleheader. Rend Lake (33-15 overall) hosts Logan (29-22, 14-8).
Wabash Valley went with their stopper, Spencer Drake. The undefeated sophomore righthander picked up his 10th win one of his shortest stints of the spring - five innings. Kyle Rupe came on in the sixth followed by Matt Geislinger in the eighth, his two innings of work providing a team-leading fourth save.
Cole Gleason and Edgar Figueroa each had two hits for Wabash (40-12), with Gleason’s hits resulting in two RBI’s.
The Warriors outhit Southwestern, 7-4.
