Mt. Carmel landed one player on the All-Big 8 Conference baseball team announced Thursday by league officials. Cort Rodgers was named to the 13-player squad.
Rodgers was one of 10 position players selected by league coaches in recent balloting. League champion Jasper and runnerup Mt. Vernon each grabbed two spots. Craig Shepherd and Spencer Otto were named from Jasper, which finished 6-0 in league play. Mt. Vernon, one loss back in the final standings, placed Austin Krizan and Logan Brown on the squad.
Boonville, which took third with a 4-2 record, and fourth-place Vincennes (3-3) also put two position players on the all-star team.
For Boonville, Devan Franz and Lane Kirkland made the team, as did the Alices’ Joe Bobe and Bailey Montgomery.
Neither fifth-place Princeton (2-4) or Washington (1-5) which finished sixth ahead of Mt. Carmel (9-17 overall, 0-6 in Big 8), placed a player on the conference team.
Pitchers named were: Cody Mobley (Mt. Vernon), Cal Krueger (Jasper) and Justin Beard (Boonville).
Mt. Carmel, after dropping their last eight games of the regular season, bounced back to defeat Eldorado in the semfinals of the IHSA Class 2A sectional tournament, before bowing to eventual champion Carmi in the championship game.
• In girls tennis, league champion Jasper claimed five of the 10 spots on the all-conference team, also released Thursday. Princeton, which finished second with a 4-1 dual mark, landed Emily Pedigo on the squad.
Mt. Carmel does not compete for Big 8 tennis honors because the Lady Aces play their season in the fall along with all Illinois schools.
