TUSCOLA, Ill. - Mt. Carmel has won the 11-year-old Section 1 baseball championship. The 11's held off Champaign-East, 6-5, in a thriller to capture the flag, the first sectional title for a Mt. Carmel all-star team since 2006.
Bret Doan was the starter for Craig Halbig's team, and worked the maximum of 85 pitches before being relieved by Adam Stoneberger who got the save. Champaign had the tying and lead runners on base when Stoneberger induced a ground ball to short to end the game.
Mt. Carmel, 6-1 in post-season play, will open play in the state tournament this weekend in Chicagoland. They will seek to become the first local team in history to win a game at the state tournament level.
