TUSCOLA, Ill. — Champaign-East quieted the high-flying Mt. Carmel offense on Monday night to even the series between the two and force a winner-take-all game tonight at 6:30 p.m.
The 5-1 win was impressive for Champaign pitchers against a Mt. Carmel team which had scored 79 runs in their previous five post-season games. The 11s pitching was solid as well, but did not get the kind of run support they have been used to.
A berth in this weekend’s state tournament awaits the winner. Mt. Carmel has not had a team reach beyond the sectional level since 2006, when the 12-year-old team won both the district and sectional to gain a state berth in Chicagoland.
Mt. Carmel manager Craig Halbig had indicated that Adam Stoneberger, who picked up a win over Pittsfield on Saturday, would be ready for tonight as the starting pitcher.
