EFFINGHAM, Ill. — Mt. Carmel struggled at the plate in the regular-season Golden Aces’ finale at Effingham on Saturday. The Flaming Hearts blanked the Aces, 1-0 and 7-0, in non-conference play.
“We could not get anything going at the plate,” said Aces manager John Copeland. “We were off balance all day at the plate.”
Mt. Carmel (4-14) generated only four hits in the opener, which cost Cole Berry a quality start. Copeland said it was a “tough loss for a kid that pitched his best game ever against a very good team.”
Berry allowed only one Effingham hit, while striking out four batters.
In the second game, the Hearts got to Aces starter Thomas Allen early. He gave up all seven runs in two innings of work. Kiefer Goldman came out of the bullpen and worked four scoreless innings in relief.
The Aces host this week’s IHSA Class 2A regional tournament.
