CHICAGO - The Mt. Carmel 11-year-old all-stars rallied to defeat Streator, 7-5, in the opening game of the state baseball tournament on Friday night.
Trailing 5-3, the 11s scored two runs in the fifth to tie the game, then added two in the six to pull out the win. Mt. Carmel, now 7-1 in post-season play at three tournament levels, will play Hoffman Park in the championship semifinals today at 3 p.m.
A 2-run single by Drew Gill in the fifth tied the game, 5-5. Then, Chris Whetstone and Adam Stoneberger added the go-ahead runs for Craig Halbig’s team.
Gill, who started on the mound, “pitched outstanding,” according to Halbig. He was relieved by Stoneberger.
Slugger Bret Doan was 3-for-3 at the plate, and helped Mt. Carmel get off to a fast start in the first, when Mt. Carmel scored three runs. Gill was 2-for-3.
That was the only game played on the opening night of the five-team double-elimination tourney. It was Mt. Carmel’s first appearance at the state tournament since 2006.
