Mt. Carmel’s 11-year-old baseball team knew it had two games to win one and capture the District 1 championship in Salem.
After all, the 11s were undefeated. Olney had to win to force a winner-take-all final game.
But, manager Craig Halbig could sense in the dugout prior to Tuesday’s contest that his team wanted none of that.

"They were set on not coming back to Salem,” Halbig said. “They were going to win the championship that night and that was the way it was going to be.”

That’s the way it turned out, as Mt. Carmel’s big bats came out again in a 13-8 title-clinching win over Olney, advancing the team to the Sectional tournament which opens on Friday night in Tuscola.

It was the first district title for a Mt. Carmel all-star team since the 12s turned the trick in 2006.

Mt. Carmel clubbed four home runs in the win. Bret Doan had two, including a grand slam in the fifth inning. Clayton Halbig and Connor Lane also added blasts.

Drew Gill pitched 4.2 innings to get the win.
