MT. CARMEL, ILL. – The Mt. Carmel girls golf team is still undefeated on the season. They improved to 15-0 with a five-shot win over visiting Vincennes Lincoln on Wednesday. The Lady Aces carded a 189, to the Alices 194.

Mt. Carmel was led by Daisy Schrader, who fired a nine-hole round of 44 to take medalist honors. Allyson Armstrong was next at 45, followed by Faith Witsman (46) and Maya Smith (54).

The Lady Aces play at Big 8 Conference opponent Mt. Vernon on Thursday.

The Lady Aces move to 14-0 after winning a dual match against Carmi.

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. – The boy’s golf team at Mount Carmel High School is a veteran team, with four seniors leading the way. Meanwhile, the Lady Aces team is devoid of seniors, relying on freshmen and sophomores for leadership.

On Thursday, at the season-opening Mount Carmel Invitational, it didn’t matter. Both Aces teams finished at the top of the standings in their respective divisions.

Boys coach John White, beginning his 12th year at the helm, was dutifully impressed with his team’s cumulative round of 309. So much so that if they turn that score again in two months at the sectional tournament, that score may land them a berth in the Class 1A state tournament.

MT. CARMEL – Aces golf coach John White is quickly learning something about his team.

“Today, we shot two 38s, two 39s and a 40. You can’t get much more consistent than that,” said White after Mt. Carmel’s 27-shot win over Robinson here on Tuesday. “That’s what I think this team will be like.”

The Aces, after finishing second at their own invitational Monday (losing to winner Harrisburg by one shot), again shot a team score of 154 in their first dual match of the season. But this time it was good enough for an easy win over Robinson’s score of 181.

Bridger Kolb and Blake Stipp were co-medalists on the day with rounds of 38. Sophomore Blake Golden, medalist Monday with an uber-impressive 2-under round of 33, was one shot back at 39, tied with Paul Ruth.

DECATUR, IL – Braving the wind and rainy conditions, Abbey Leighty, senior to be at Mt. Carmel High School, qualified for the Optimist International Golf Championships.  The Optimist International will be held July 26 – 31 at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Qualifying was held at Red Tail Run in Decatur where Leighty finished 3rd in the IHSA State Championship in October.  While the course and conditions were familiar, the course was played at 6,156 yards, much longer than the State Tournament.  Rounds of 80-78-80 gave Abbey a 3 day total of 238 put her in 4th place assuring a coveted spot in the prestigious field.
