Sharks send 7 to all-star swim meet

MILLSTADT, Ill. — Seven members of the Wabash Valley Sharks contributed to the Illiana Swim Conference’s third place finish in the Southern Illinois All-Star swim meet here on Saturday, Aug. 2.
The Illiana Conference team was composed of  qualifying swimmers from league teams in Brittlebank (Mt.  Vernon, Ind.), Carmi, Fairfield, Harrisburg, McLeansboro, Mt. Carmel and Olney. The conference team was coached by Matt Powell, of Olney. Other conferences competing in the All Star meet included The Central Illinois Swim Conference, Kaskaskia Swim Conference, Midwest Swim Conference, Shawnee Swim Conference, and Southern Illinois Swim League.
Mt. Carmel sent Teagan Guard, Abby Rosignol, Boyd Holt, Eden Wankel, Mady Young, Ivan Holt and Andrew Goldman. Each swimmer could compete in up to four of five possible events in their age group.

Sharks finish 4th at invite

With a numerical edge on the field gathered Saturday for the Wabash Valley Sharks Swim Invitational at the Wabash Valley College pool, the Olney Tigersharks were able to pile up points in all age divisions.

But, they dominated the upper age divisions, and because of that, dominated the eight-team invitational.

Olney swamped the field with 611 points, well ahead of runnerup Carmi’s total of 368. The Sharks just missed out on a third-place trophy, with their 279 points falling just shy of Mt. Vernon, Ind. Brittlebank’s total of 282. Fairfield wound up fifth (225) followed by Harrisburg (149), Evansville YMCA (111) and McLeansboro (62).

Tryouts for Sharks begins May 5

Tryouts for the Wabash Valley Sharks swim team open May 5 at the WVC pool.

There will be three nights of tryouts on the first three practice dates of  May 5, 6 and 8 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. each evening.

The Sharks season runs from May 5 through Aug. 2.

Due to increased numbers, there will be a parent meeting on the first night of tryouts to discuss some changes to practice times for some of the swimmers.

The final deadline to register is May 8.

"Swim team fees are: $160 for first participant, $150 for second with a $400 family maximum.

All participants must be able to swim the length of the WVC pool without any aid and know the fundamentals of each stroke.

Sharks take 6th at Illiana meet

The Wabash Valley Sharks finished sixth at the Illiana Conference swim meet they hosted Saturday at the Wabash Valley College pool.
WVS finished with 147 points in the 88-event meet. Olney won the team championship with 578 points, followed by Brittlebank of Mt. Vernon, Ind. with 446 and Carmi with 413 points. Harrisburg took fourth with 224 points, with Fairfield next at 199. After the
Sharks McLeansboro rounded out the field with 33 points.
