MATTOON, Ill. – Mt. Carmel put up a fight before exiting the IHSA Class 3A state volleyball series Monday night.

Effingham eliminated the Lady Aces with a 2-1 victory. After the Flaming Hearts took the first game, 25-17, Mt. Carmel bounced back to even the match with a 25-22 win. Effingham overpowered the Lady Aces in the decisive third game, 25-12.

“It was a great match,” said Mt. Carmel coach Beth Bunting. “Effingham is a hard hitting team with a lot of height and power. Our front line did an excellent job stopping and taking the heat off of Effingham’s hits. It took Effingham back and it allowed us to put them on their heels. Effingham definitely had to work for their win tonight.”

MT. CARMEL – Mt. Carmel volleyball coach Beth Bunting said mistakes cost her Lady Aces in Wednesday’s Big 8 Conference match against Jasper.

“We made silly mistakes by letting the ball drop between multiple players which cost us,” Bunting said after the Wildcats left the Hilltop with a 3-0 win by scores of 25-15, 25-14, 15-14. Jasper secured another Big 8 championship, finishing with a perfect 6-0 league mark.

But it wasn’t always easy against a Mt. Carmel team which at times played very well. “We started off each set very well,” Bunting said. “We stayed with or ahead of Jasper at times by covering on defense and digging up some hard hits.”

MT. CARMEL – Mt. Carmel stayed with Big 8 Conference power Boonville for a while in Tuesday’s league matchup at the Hilltop. But in the end, the Pioneers were too much, pulling away to a 3-0 win.

Trailing 10-4 early, Mt. Carmel rallied to pull within 13-9, before Boonville (20-8, 5-1 in Big 8) outscored the hosts 16-2 to claim a 25-15 win in the opener. From there, the Pioneers made it look easy, winning the final two games, 25-10 and 25-8, for the series sweep.
