Top 10 sports stories of 2012

What were the top local sports stories of the year? As usual, it was difficult to rank them in any kind of order, but we gave it our best shot. In the end, the little girl we’ve come to know since her days of free throw shooting and punt, pass and kicking, has made it to the top of the sports list, with big numbers and a decision that had the nation talking. Tyra Buss is our choice as the No. 1 sports story of the year. Here’s the list:

LIC loses two more schools, down to 10

Two more of the smaller Little Illini Conference schools are jumping ship. The Little Okaw Valley Conference voted to accept Cumberland and Palestine-Hutsonville to the league at a recent meeting. The switch to the LOVC will take effect in the 2015-16 season, unless the LIC allows the pair out earlier.

New IHSA offerings kick off this weekend

The Illinois High School Association’s (IHSA) new state final programs for athletes with disabilities will debut at the IHSA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals at Evanston High School on Saturday, November 17.
