MATTOON, Ill. — Tyra Buss has stretched her magnificent high school athletic career to the maximum. She won a IHSA Class 2A sectional championship in three events here Thursday and will advance to the state meet next week at Eastern Illinois University, her final appearance as a Mt. Carmel High School athlete.

Buss won titles in the 100-meter high hurdles, the 800 and the 300-low hurdles. She placed third in the triple jump, and though she missed qualifying there still managed to set a new school record with a leap of 33-feet 4 1/2-inches.

FAIRFIELD, Ill. — Due to illness and commitments, the Mt. Carmel girls track team took only nine athletes to the 10-team Fairfield Invitational Friday.

That was still good enough as the Lady Aces rolled to the championship with 155 points, easily outdistancing second-place Christopher (101 points). Flora (62), Patoka (58) and Eldorado (55) rounded out the top five.

FAIRFIELD, Ill. — Wabash County will be well represented at the SIJHSAA Class S state track meet May 10 in Salem.

Allendale qualified two individuals in five events and two relays out of the regional meet Monday in Fairfield. St. Mary’s advanced one individual in three events.
