The end of an era

CHARLESTON, Ill. — That’s a wrap, folks.

Tyra Buss completed perhaps the most star-studded and record-setting athletic career in Mt. Carmel High School history Saturday at the IHSA Class 2A state track meet at Eastern Illinois University.

She went out by adding to her record parade and newsmaker ability all at once. She earned medals in three events at the state meet — all accomplished on a broken toe.

Buss goes to state in 3 events

MATTOON, Ill. — Tyra Buss has stretched her magnificent high school athletic career to the maximum. She won a IHSA Class 2A sectional championship in three events here Thursday and will advance to the state meet next week at Eastern Illinois University, her final appearance as a Mt. Carmel High School athlete.

Buss won titles in the 100-meter high hurdles, the 800 and the 300-low hurdles. She placed third in the triple jump, and though she missed qualifying there still managed to set a new school record with a leap of 33-feet 4 1/2-inches.
