Golf award banquet held

MT. CARMEL – As she reviewed the accomplishments of the 46-4 Lady Aces golf season, coach Karin Kelsey told the crowd gathered at Monday’s post-season banquet that “it was such a wonderful year. This is as close to perfect as I’ll ever get.”

With only one graduating senior, however, the talented returnees of 2015 could move her even closer.

The boys team was also honored at the banquet as they too eye a very promising future as well.

Tewell ready for next move

Mt. Carmel senior golfer Morgan Tewell isn’t worried about the adjustment to college life next year at Nebraska-Kearney, where Monday she signed athletic and academic scholarship papers to attend.

Because she’s already been through all that.

Tewell transferred to Mt. Carmel from Lawrenceville, where she was on the boy’s team, for her senior season and served as the lone upperclassmen on a 46-4 Lady Aces team that only lost matches to teams who finished in the top five at the IHSA Class 1A state golf tournament.

Making new friends and moving somewhere new has turned into good training for what lies ahead in Tewell’s life.

“I really think the transition will be easier,” Tewell said. “After moving here and knowing what it will be like will be an advantage and I will be ready.”

Mt. Carmel coach Karin Kelsey couldn’t have been happier with the move. “She blended in really well, but what impressed me was she helped our younger golfers and was such a good leader,” Kelsey said.

Leighty ties for 3rd at state golf tourney

DECATUR, Ill. – Abbey Leighty recorded the best individual finish by a Mt. Carmel golfer ever at the IHSA state tournament on Saturday.

Leighty, a junior making her third straight appearance at the Class A finals at Red Tail Run Golf Course here, tied for third place, with a 36-hole total of 152, three shots off the medalist pace set by Lauren Chappell of Charleston. Leighty finished tied with Taylor Goodley of Eldorado, both two shots in back of state runnerup Morgan Savage of Rochester.

The third-place finish by Leighty topped the previous school best fourth-place finish turned in by Wade Thompson at the 2010 Class 1A tournament. Thomas, while leading the Aces team to the state championship, tied for fourth with a 151, six shots behind medalist Nate Davis of Winchester.

Lady Aces miss state by one shot

WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. – Even as a young team with only one senior, the Mt. Carmel Lady Aces golf team was poised to advance to the IHSA Class A state tournament. They won the regional tournament last week in impressive fashion.

But it wasn’t enough as the Lady Aces missed going to state by one shot at Tuesday’s rain-delayed Class A Sectional tournament at the Franklin Country Club course. Mt. Carmel finished fourth with a final team score of 345, one shot away from Massac County, which fired a 344 to claim third-place and the final spot for automatic advancement.

BACK TO BACK REGIONAL CHAMPS

Effingham, Ill. – The Mt. Carmel girl’s golf team did more than win their second straight IHSA Class A regional championship on Wednesday. In routing the field here, they sent a message to the rest of the state that they are ready to compete for a state tournament bid.

The Lady Aces blitzed the field at the Effingham Country Club Course, winning the title by 24 strokes. Mt. Carmel’s team score of 361 bettered two teams who use this as their home course: second-place Effingham (385) and third-place Effingham St. Anthony (390). Those three teams will advance to the Class A Sectional tournament Monday at West Frankfort.
