Spikers improving, ready for biggest challenge yet

MT. CARMEL- The Lady Aces volleyball team faces their toughest test of the young season Thursday night with a trip to perennial state powerhouse Edwards County. But, without a senior on the roster, the Aces have learned a thing or two already.

Tuesday, against Lawrencville, the Aces almost stole a game which would have clinched a win over a Lady Indians barely its’ senior, with three upperclassmen on the roster. First-year coach Kelsey Beckerman took note of the effort and improvement, despite the 0-2 start.

Aces spikers bow out at Mattoon

MATTOON, Ill. – Mt. Carmel put up a fight before exiting the IHSA Class 3A state volleyball series Monday night.

Effingham eliminated the Lady Aces with a 2-1 victory. After the Flaming Hearts took the first game, 25-17, Mt. Carmel bounced back to even the match with a 25-22 win. Effingham overpowered the Lady Aces in the decisive third game, 25-12.

 “It was a great match,” said Mt. Carmel coach Beth Bunting. “Effingham is a hard hitting team with a lot of height and power. Our front line did an excellent job stopping and taking the heat off of Effingham’s hits. It took Effingham back and it allowed us to put them on their heels. Effingham definitely had to work for their win tonight.”

Jasper beats Lady Aces to finish off Big 8

MT. CARMEL – Mt. Carmel volleyball coach Beth Bunting said mistakes cost her Lady Aces in Wednesday’s Big 8 Conference match against Jasper.

“We made silly mistakes by letting the ball drop between multiple players which cost us,” Bunting said after the Wildcats left the Hilltop with a 3-0 win by scores of 25-15, 25-14, 15-14. Jasper secured another Big 8 championship, finishing with a perfect 6-0 league mark.

 But it wasn’t always easy against a Mt. Carmel team which at times played very well. “We started off each set very well,” Bunting said. “We stayed with or ahead of Jasper at times by covering on defense and digging up some hard hits.”

Boonville too strong for Lady Aces

MT. CARMEL – Mt. Carmel stayed with Big 8 Conference power Boonville for a while in Tuesday’s league matchup at the Hilltop. But in the end, the Pioneers were too much, pulling away to a 3-0 win.

Trailing 10-4 early, Mt. Carmel rallied to pull within 13-9, before Boonville (20-8, 5-1 in Big 8) outscored the hosts 16-2 to claim a 25-15 win in the opener. From there, the Pioneers made it look easy, winning the final two games, 25-10 and 25-8, for the series sweep.

Tigers sweep Aces spikers

MT. CARMEL - Princeton swept past Mt. Carmel, 3-0, in Big 8 Conference volleyball at the Hilltop Tuesday night.
The Lady Tigers (15-5 on the season) won the first game, 25-10. After a 25-17 win in the second game, they finished off the hosts in straight sets by winning the third game, 25-12.
Mt. Carmel got three ace serves from Patricia Jeffries, with Brandi Metcalf and Kelsey McGill adding one apiece.
Jeffries and Ashlynn Newkirk both had one block. Carmen Deisher registered two kills, with Leah Bunting and Metcalf each picking up one.
McGill had three assists and Bunting one.
The Lady Aces play at Fairfield Monday starting at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Aces fall in four

VINCENNES, Ind. - Mt. Carmel lost to Vincennes Rivet, 3-1, in non-conference volleyball Monday night.
Rivet took the first two games, 25-12 and 25-13, before the Lady Aces bounced back to win the third game, 25-20.
The Patriots then held off Mt. Carmel to win the fourth game and the match, 25-22.
“We started out slow tonight but the girls played very well together tonight,” said Mt. Carmel coach Beth Bunting. “My girls looked like a team tonight and made me very proud.”

Aces JV spikers finish 2-3 at tourney

FAIRFIELD, Ill.—Mt. Carmel’s junior varsity volleyball team finished with a 2-3 record at the Fairfield Invitational Saturday.
In the pool play opener, the host Mules beat Mt. Carmel, 21-10, 21-13. Carmen Deisher had two kills and one ace.
The Lady Aces then fell to Robinson, 2-1. After Mt. Carmel won the first game, 21-16, the Lady Maroons stormed back with a 21-7 win and a 15-10 victory in the decisive third game.
Kasey Pearson had eight assists in the game. Deisher and McKenna Zimmerman had three kills. Zimmerman added three aces.
Mt. Carmel won its first match of the day against Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran, 21-19 and 21-12. Kylie Terrel finished with six kills, while Deisher added five. Natalie Medina had four aces.
In silver pool play, Mt. Carmel defeated Grayville in three games. The Lady Aces took the first game, 21-18 before Grayville evened the match with a 21-17 win in the second game. The third game went to Mt. Carmel, 18-16.
Tessa Hargrave and Deisher each had eight kills in the win.
In the final match of the day, Pinckneyville recorded a straight-set win, with victories of 21-10 and 21-12.
Mt. Carmel plays at Vincennes Rivet Monday. Tuesday, Princeton visits the Hilltop for a Big 8 Conference match that begins at 6 p.m.

Vincennes tops VB Aces

VINCENNES, Ind. – Vincennes Lincoln swept Mt. Carmel in Big 8 Conference volleyball Tuesday night.

The Lady Aces prevailed 25-15, 25-21 and 25-12. They also took the junior varsity match, 25-24 and 25-22.

In the varsity game, Brandi Metcalf led the Aces with six kills. Kelsey McGill added five assists. In the JV game, Carmen Deisher had five kills. Kylie Terrel had three aces.

Alex Rosignol: A Cinderella story

The latest chapter in Alex Rosignol’s athletic career has been lifted straight from a Hollywood fairy tale.

Dreams dashed. Then perseverance overcomes hardship, with the dream ultimately realized.

“It’s a true Cinderella story,” is how Mt. Carmel volleyball coach Beth Bunting describes Rosignol’s emergence from the throes of a knee injury all the way back to what transpired Wednesday at the Hilltop: Signing to play Division I volleyball at the school of her choice, SIU-Carbondale.

“Alex deserves this. She’s worked hard for this.”

Mount Carmel High School senior, Alex Rosignol will be signing with Southern Illinois University-Carbondale on Wednesday, April 16. The signing will take place at Mount Carmel High School at 3:30 pm in the main gym. Alex will be receiving an athletic scholarships from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. She will play for the Women's Volleyball team.
