Lady Warriors off and running in GRAC

Kalyn Chapman refused to let Olney Central spoil the first wekeend of Great Rivers Athletic Conference play for the Wabash Valley College Lady Warriors softball team.

Chapman, a sophomore from Boonville, Ind., came on in relief to get the final two outs Saturday, preserving a 5-4 win and a sweep of the first two GRAC doubleheaders of the season.

New era begins for softball Aces

The very young Mt. Carmel Lady Aces softball team which opens the 2014 season Tuesday at Lawrenceville has had previous few outside practices.

That means that new coach Sara Pearson will have to teach the Aces - and teach them her way - on the fly as the season unfolds.

“I would like to cultivate a atmosphere in Mt. Carmel that would see softball in a different light,” said Pearson, who prepped at Carmi before playing college softball at Mid-Continent University. “That’s our desire this year, to make something out of this program, and to be consistent.”

Norris HR gives WVC sweep

NICEVILLE, Fla. — A solo home run by Cortney Norris in the sixth inning held up as Wabash Valley edged Southeastern Iowa, 1-0, to complete a sweep of Thursday softball games here.

In the opener, the Lady Warriors defeated Lake Michigan, 8-2, helped in part by a homer by Norris, the Gibson Southern sophomore who had two shots on the day.

WVC improved to 7-3 on the season, and remain undefeated on their week-long Florida swing, at 5-0.

Maleah Armstrong plays tough spot for Evansville Heat

EVANSVILLE — When a batter steps to the plate against the Evansville Heat 8U softball team, the first person they see is Mt. Carmel’s Maleah Armstrong.

Ponies finish 4th in league tournament

Mt. Carmel’s Pony League softball team made a run at West Salem in the third-place game of the league tournament on Saturday.

The team, sponsored by Body & Sol, scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 10-7 against a West Salem which won the regular-season title only to be upset by the Albion Drillers in the semifinals on Friday.
Hits by Natalie Medina, Emily Wampler, Mariah VanMatre and Madison Hodge produced the runs.

Then, the bottom fell out.
