Errors costs WVC sweep

CENTRALIA, Ill. - Two costly errors in the fifth inning allowed Kaskaskia to score four runs and defeat Wabash Valley, 4-2, in the first game of a Great Rivers Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday. The Lady Warriors bounced back to win the second game, 11-2, but the damage had been done.

WVC (25-6, 15-1) fell to second in the GRAC standings, one loss behind first-place Lake Land (14-0, 36-6 overall).

Kalyn Chapman took the first-game loss, and is 14-4 on the year. She struck out 11. Only one of the Kaskaskia runs against her was earned.

In the second game, Gibson Southern’s Cortney Norris hit a 2-run home run in the fourth to put WVC ahead to stay. Allison Webster fanned 11 batters en route to her eighth win of the year.

Lady Aces win again, now 3-0

Mt. Carmel softball coach Sarah Pearson said her Lady Aces “are starting to jell.” The results are starting to speak for themselves.

The Lady Aces routed Red Hill, 10-1, in non-conference play Wednesday to improve to 3-0 on the year, heading into Big 8 Conference play at home today (Thursday) against Princeton. First pitch is at 5 p.m.

Lady Warriors still perfect in GRAC

The Wabash Valley College softball team remained undefeated in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference with a doubleheader sweep over Southwestern Tuesday at Paul Schnarre Field.

The 9-1 and 13-5 wins move the Lady Warriors to 22-5 on the season and 12-0 in the GRAC. They remain one game ahead of the league’s other unbeatern, Lake Land (10-0).

What a start for Lady Aces

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ill. — Let this soak in for just a moment:

Mt. Carmel is 1-0 in softball for the first time in as long as anyone can remember.

Winless last year, and with only three victories in the previous three years, the Lady Aces opened the 2014 season with a 7-5 win over Lawrenceville Tuesday in Sara Pearson’s first game as head coach.
