Lady Warriors back home, earn more awards

MT. CARMEL – A few short miles before the bus carrying the Wabash Valley College Lady Warriors softball team reached its destination of Spencer Sports Center – which it did at 3 a.m. Monday following a nine-day, 3300-mile trip and seventh place finish at the NJCAA Division I softball tournament in St. George, Utah – Paul Schnarre took time to thank his players for such a successful season, and another chapter in the Hall of Fame coach’s illustrious career.

“I thought we played well and represented our area well,” said Schnarre of the Region 24 champions, the 10th team he has taken to the national tournament.

Lady Warriors win Region 24 title

CENTRALIA, Ill. – There was an almost regal aura of superiority surrounding the Lake Land College softball team as play began Friday in the NJCAA Region 24 tourmament.

Why not? The Lakers had won the last four titles, they were 51-game winners ranked eighth in the latest Division I national poll, and had already won the Great Rivers Athletic Conference regular-season championship by a full five games.

However, a strange thing happened on the way to the coronation.

Lake Land was stunned in the tournament’s very first game Friday by Kaskaskia, 2-1. Then, Wabash Valley finished the Lakers off on Saturday with a 7-3 win in the championship game. So, it is the Lady Warriors instead who will be going to St. George, Utah for the NJCAA national tournament from May 13-16.

Lake Land denies WVC...again

CENTRALIA, Ill. — It was bad enough that Lake Land had already beaten Wabash Valley, 7-1, Friday on the first day of the Region 24 softball Final Four here.

But by the time the Lady Warriors had bounced back Saturday to force a rematch in the double-elimination tourney, they had lost one key player,  with another subpar, both after ankle injuries.

Lake Land took advantage of its’ better health status to win a game devoid of an extra base hit, 9-1, to oust WVC and win the championship and with it an automatic berth in the NJCAA national tournament in St. George, Utah.
