Second half swoon continues

ROBINSON, Ill. – If a high school basketball game was only half as long as it is, the Mt. Carmel Golden Aces boys team might be undefeated.

But, it isn’t and they aren’t.

Mt. Carmel’s second half swoon continued here Tuesday, when the Aces lost a 9-point lead in the third quarter and fell to Robinson, 58-55, in non-conference play.

“”It’s frustrating for sure,” said an exasperated Aces coach Tyler Buss after the loss. “We’ll go back to the drawing board and try to figure this second-half stuff out.”

Whereas the inside game faltered in the second half Saturday against Jasper, this time it was the transition game which suddenly stopped clicking after Mt. Carmel (4-3) gathered a 38-29 lead in the third quarter. Robinson (2-5) took advantage with a 10-point run to grab a 39-38 lead at the end of the frame.

Willis: We won't forget it

PRINCETON, Ind. – Princeton superstar Jackie Young set both single-game and career scoring marks in the Lady Tigers 103-47 Big 8 Conference basketball victory over Mt. Carmel at Tiger Arena Monday night.

But that’s not what anyone in attendance from west of the Wabash River will remember from an otherwise celebratory night. Instead they may focus on the directives from the Lady Tigers coach which seemed to disrespect Mt. Carmel.

Lady Aces coach Tim Willis, who learned a thing or two about managing greatness during the career of now Indiana freshman Tyra Buss, said the 56-point rout would be hard to simply move on from. “Oh no, we won’t forget it,” he said in response to a reporter’s post-game question. “That isn’t happening.”

Warriors flirt with perfection

MT. CARMEL – Words to describe Wabash Valley College’s first-half performance against Olney Central College might include: perfect, flawless.

For the first 20 minutes of Wednesday’s Great Rivers Athletic Conference men’s game at Spencer Sports Center, the Warriors were that good.

“It’s one of the best halves of basketball I’ve been associated with in 21 years,” said WVC coach Mike Carpenter after his team’s eventual 83-58 victory. “Offensively and defensively, we played well and moved the ball. We hit shots, defended and did a good job.”

Everything clicked for the Warriors as they steamed to a 47-16 lead by halftime. WVC shot 61 percent from the floor while holding the visitors to a paltry 15 percent from the floor and only one offensive rebound. The half included a thundering slam dunk by Warrior forward Kasey Elam that simply defied science and logic, enough so for the game officials to actually wave off the score on a technicality.

Flora pulls away late to win

MT. CARMEL – After one half of solid inside defense against a taller Flora team, things began to unravel for the Mt. Carmel Lady Aces in the third quarter Monday night.

What began as a drip, drip, drip turned into a torrent in the fourth quarter as the Wolfgals pulled away to a 47-36 non-conference win at the Hilltop.

“I thought we started to slide a little bit in the second quarter,” said Mt. Carmel coach Tim Willis after Flora (6-1) had spoiled his team’s home opener. “We get going 100 miles per hour and aren’t sure what to do with the ball, and that leads to turnovers. With this team, it’s about teaching patience.”
