Defense wins CIT opener

CARMI – Mount Carmel’s basketball team sent a strong message to the rest of the field Monday night at the Carmi-White County Invitational.

And it had nothing to do with offense.

Instead, the Golden Aces put on a defensive show that simply stifled Fairfield (9-7), limiting the Mules to a first-half shooting percentage in the teens and a total of only 10 points. Mount Carmel (14-3), the three-time defending champions of this round-robin event, rolled on to a 59-37 victory.

Aces end skid with win over Boonville

BOONVILLE, Ind. – The Mount Carmel basketball team has righted its ship, and the Golden Aces are now gladly sailing into uncharted waters.

The Golden Aces snapped a three-game losing streak with a 68-59 Big 8 Conference victory over Boonville, Ind. On Friday night. The win guaranteed their first winning season in 14 years in the league.

Lady Aces have tougher time with Mount Vernon

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill., -- With two starters returning from injury, Mount Carmel figured to get a tougher game from Big 8 Conference opponent Mount Vernon, Ind. than they did in December, when the Lady Aces won, 47-15, at the Toyota Teamwork Classic.

They did. But when the scoreboard read 12-1 Mount Vernon midway into the first quarter, Lady Aces faithful at the Hilltop were left shaking their heads. That much tougher?

It was at that point, though, that Mount Carmel (11-8, 2-3 in Big 8) finally got untracked. The Lady Aces had made up the entire deficit by halftime, then eased away in the second half for a 43-34 victory.

Aces fall in Top 10 battle

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. – If Mt. Carmel Public Utility could have somehow captured the kinetic energy inside the Hilltop during the first quarter of Saturday’s Class 2A Top Ten battle between the Golden Aces and visiting Eldorado, there would have been enough free power for a month or more in the community.

The game couldn’t possibly have continued at that frenetic pace all afternoon, and it didn’t. Yet, Eldorado found a late spark all its own to pull out a 50-48 non-conference win.

MOUNT CARMEL, ILL. – Mount Carmel had control of the ball with 44 seconds left in a 39-39 game against Carmi on Monday night at the Hilltop. Would the Lady Aces whittle the clock, call a time out, then run a play? Or would they play through to the horn?

They didn’t need to do the former, because they were ready for the latter.
