Still plenty on line tonight for Aces

Though Mt. Carmel has already secured a playoff spot, there is still plenty to play for tonight when the Golden Aces host Mt. Vernon, Ill. in a non-conference season-finale at Riverview Stadium.

“It’s the difference between playing at home next week in the playoffs or being on the road in the first round,” said Peach, as his Aces prepare next week for their ninth straight post-season run, and 36th trip in the 41-year history of the Illinois High School Association playoffs.

A 7-2 record could be good enough to get the Aces a first-round home game. It’s not always that way, however. “Last year the way the bracket fell, you knew you would be on the road if you were 7-2,” said Peach. “Things look like this year that if we win we can get a home game.”

Aces earn title, playoff bid with win

BOONVILLE, Ind. – Mt. Carmel’s 36-7 Big 8 Conference football victory over Boonville Friday night resonated on both sides of the Wabash River.

Not only did the win cement a tri-championship in the final league standings – with the Aces joining Jasper and Vincennes who both won their league finales as well – the win also guaranteed a playoff spot for the Aces, their ninth in a row and 36th in the 41-year history of the IHSA state tournament series.

Mt. Carmel (6-2, 5-1 in Big 8) hosts Mt. Vernon, Ill. Friday at 7 p.m. and will then learn on Saturday night the playoff matchups.

Plenty on line for Aces

MT. CARMEL – When Mt. Carmel upset Vincennes last week to create a three-way tie atop the Big 8 Conference football standings, it was a special win, according to Golden Aces coach Darren Peach.

“It was a signature win for those guys, against a quality team who was 7-0,” he said.

But without a win tonight at Boonville in the Big 8 finale, the probability of a three-way league championship – similar to 2006 with Jasper and Vincennes sharing with the Aces – will go by the wayside.

“We have a lot to play for and a lot to prove,” said Peach, noting that the conference crown is just one piece of Week 8 importance. The Aces still need one win to ensure qualification for the Illinois playoffs for the ninth consecutive season and 32nd time in the past 33 years.
