Aces too much for Anna-Jonesboro

MT. CARMEL- What looked at first like an improbable Anna-Jonesboro rally brewing in the third quarter ended up being little more than a bump in the road in Mt. Carmel’s 48-7 IHSA Class 3A first-round playoff game win Saturday at Riverview Stadium.

For a while, it looked like what the Wildcats had going was real. After Mt. Carmel had built a 34-0 lead by halftime, A-J scored on its’ first possession of the third quarter, stopped the Aces on defense, then began to churn again.

Then, before Aces fans could even utter the word “Greenville (a reference to last year’s 3A quarterfinal round game in which the Comets rallied from a 21-point deficit in the game’s final three minutes to beat the Aces),” Mt. Carmel rose up on defense to stop the Wildcats inside the Aces 5-yard line. That stand seemed to spark the offense, which moved downfield to score, putting an end to the A-J uprising.
