Wall hopes to get back in state wrestling tourney

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Mt. Carmel senior Cody Wall will be a very interested spectator early Friday at the IHSA Class 1A state wrestling tournament at State Farm Arena here.

If Wall sees what he hopes for, he will get to wrestle again. Otherwise his season, and prep career, is over.

Wall lost to Kevin McNally of Grant Park, 8-2, in a preliminary round match at 182 pounds Thursday afternoon.

Wall, now 38-5 on the year, is hopeful that McNally can win his next match. If he does, Wall reenters the tournament in the wrestlebacks.

However, a McNally victory is anything but certain. He faces No. 2 seed Sean Ward of Winnebago, who pinned first-round opponent Larryn Kukla of Petersburg PORTA in 1:42.

Mt. Carmel had two other wrestlers qualify for the state meet, Andrew Wise and Aaron Wood, both as alternates. Neither received a callup, however, and will not see action on the mat this weekend.

In matches involving area wrestlers, Zach Shoulders of Olney lost his first match at 220 pounds. He fell to Jermaine Johnson of Chicago Bowen, 4-3.

Trevor Richards of Lawrenceville was pinned in 3:04 by Ben Corlett of Sherrard in a 285-pound preliminary.

Competition begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday and continues Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
