Golf award banquet held

MT. CARMEL – As she reviewed the accomplishments of the 46-4 Lady Aces golf season, coach Karin Kelsey told the crowd gathered at Monday’s post-season banquet that “it was such a wonderful year. This is as close to perfect as I’ll ever get.”

With only one graduating senior, however, the talented returnees of 2015 could move her even closer.

The boys team was also honored at the banquet as they too eye a very promising future as well.

Kelsey’s team loses only state qualifier Morgan Tewell (who Monday signed a scholarship to play next year at NCAA Division II school Nebraska-Kearney) from a team that won the Big 8 Conference championship for the first time.

Back will be junior Abbey Leighty, who finished third at state (the highest state finish by any Aces golfer), to lead the way.

The Lady Aces won their second straight Class 1A regional championship, and set team records for lowest 9-hole score (148). Leighty set marks for lowest 9-hole score (35 twice) and lowest 18-hole round (76).

Tewell tied for regional medalist honors.

Lady Aces players presented a photo mural to Kelsey and White. Tewell also presented the coaches with a framed picture drawn by her mother, an art instructor at Lawrenceville, where Tewell went before transferring to Mt. Carmel for her senior season.

The Aces boys team will graduate only one player as well, Nick Deisher, who in his first year out for the sport fired a low round of 37 against Lawrenceville.

“We knew going in that it would be a lot to ask” his young team to compete in the larger Class 2A ranks. But with four juniors back and a host of underclass talent, including freshman Blake Golden, White is confident the Aces will soon return to state contender status.

White, in opening remarks, thanked many people who have helped support the program, including the school and West Berwick Golf Club. He thanked Lady Aces coach Karin Kelsey and golf pro Rick Bobbitt, as well as Liz Richardson, who continues to support the ever-growing junior golf program in memory of her late husband, Ed.

It is support like that helps with the “making of quite a golf community,” White said.

Kelsey presented all-conference awards and certificates for winning the league title. There were no other individual awards presented at the banquet.
