Jasper beats Lady Aces to finish off Big 8

MT. CARMEL – Mt. Carmel volleyball coach Beth Bunting said mistakes cost her Lady Aces in Wednesday’s Big 8 Conference match against Jasper.

“We made silly mistakes by letting the ball drop between multiple players which cost us,” Bunting said after the Wildcats left the Hilltop with a 3-0 win by scores of 25-15, 25-14, 15-14. Jasper secured another Big 8 championship, finishing with a perfect 6-0 league mark.

But it wasn’t always easy against a Mt. Carmel team which at times played very well. “We started off each set very well,” Bunting said. “We stayed with or ahead of Jasper at times by covering on defense and digging up some hard hits.”

Brandi Metcalf and Leah Bunting each had two kills and Patricia Jeffries had one. Metcalf, Jeffries and Kelsey McGill each had one ace. Jeffries had a total of three blocks, Leah Bunting had two blocks and Ashlynn Newkirk one.

Jasper took the junior varsity match as well, winning 25-12 and 25-10.

Emily Wampler led with three kills, Tessa Hargrave had two kills and Kylie Terrel had one. Carmen Deisher had three blocks and Kasey Pearson made five assists.

The Lady Aces wrap up the regular season Monday with a home game against Red Hill. The first game begins at 6:15 p.m. and Senior Night honors will be held prior to the varsity game.

NOTE: Mt. Carmel will play Effingham in the first round of the IHSA Class 3A Regional tournament at Mattoon. The game will be played at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, preceded by Olney vs. Paris. The host Wavettes are the No. 1 seed in the six-team affair.
