Boonville too strong for Lady Aces

MT. CARMEL – Mt. Carmel stayed with Big 8 Conference power Boonville for a while in Tuesday’s league matchup at the Hilltop. But in the end, the Pioneers were too much, pulling away to a 3-0 win.

Trailing 10-4 early, Mt. Carmel rallied to pull within 13-9, before Boonville (20-8, 5-1 in Big 8) outscored the hosts 16-2 to claim a 25-15 win in the opener. From there, the Pioneers made it look easy, winning the final two games, 25-10 and 25-8, for the series sweep.

“We started out the first set well and stayed with Boonville,” said Mt. Carmel coach Beth Bunting. “We were hitting hard passing well, but we got in a bind on coverage and Boonville was hitting our holes hard.

“The second set communication got us in trouble and we were not anticipating the ball. Blocking was the key and our front line did a great job helping to stop and take some heat off the ball.”

Patricia Jeffries led Mt. Carmel with four kills and five blocks. Brandi Metcalf added five kills and one ace serve, while Dylan Marshall added three kills and one ace. Kelsey McGill had 13 assists.

Boonville won the junior varsity match as well, 25-19 and 25-10. Carmen Deisher led Mt. Carmel with four kills. Kasey Pearson put up six assists.

The Lady Aces host Jasper tonight in a game rescheduled from Monday. The freshman game begins at 5 p.m.
